Getting kids to brush their teeth can feel like a daily negotiation. Some children wiggle away, some rush through it, and others simply refuse. The good news is that brushing does not have to be a battle. With the right approach for your child’s age, you can turn brushing into a habit they actually enjoy.
Building strong oral care habits early sets the stage for healthy teeth and confident smiles for life. Here is how to make brushing work at every stage of childhood.
Babies and Toddlers (Ages 0 to 3)
Oral care starts before the first tooth even appears. Gently wipe your baby’s gums with a soft, damp cloth after feedings. Once that first tooth comes in, switch to a soft infant toothbrush and a smear of fluoride toothpaste about the size of a grain of rice. Brush for your child twice a day, and keep the mood calm and loving.
At this age, brushing is something you do for your child. Singing a short song or making gentle silly faces can help the moment feel safe and fun.
Preschoolers (Ages 3 to 6)
Preschoolers love to feel independent, so let them hold the toothbrush and try on their own, then follow up to make sure every surface is clean. Use a pea sized amount of fluoride toothpaste and teach your child to spit it out. Most children this age still need help brushing well until they have the coordination to do it alone.
Make it playful. A two minute song, a favorite character toothbrush, or a sticker chart can turn brushing into a game your child wants to win.
School-Age Children (Ages 6 to 12)
As children grow, they can take on more responsibility for their own brushing, but they still benefit from reminders and the occasional check. Encourage brushing for two full minutes, twice a day, and add flossing once teeth begin to touch. This is also when permanent teeth arrive, making consistent care more important than ever.
Let your child pick their own toothbrush and toothpaste flavor. A little ownership goes a long way toward building lasting habits.
Teens (Ages 13 and Up)
Teenagers are usually capable of caring for their teeth independently, but busy schedules and changing routines can get in the way. Help them connect good oral care to things they care about, like fresh breath and a confident smile. Keep travel sized brushes handy for sports and sleepovers, and lead by example with your own routine.
